Conditions ⓘ

Use a suitable LED and prevent upward spill. Keep light low, shielded and on only when needed. Suitability depends on placement and the surrounding habitat; color alone is not enough.

Turtle friendlyRequires monochromatic amber ⓘ

Choose monochromatic amber, not 2700K warm white. Keep the source low and fully shielded, with no light visible from or spilling onto the beach. Check local requirements for the installation. This badge is conditional guidance, not a certification.

Choosing an LED color

A welcoming, warm appearance for outdoor living spaces, paths and planting.

An amber option for wildlife-conscious projects. The right choice depends on the habitat and species you are designing around.

Color alone does not determine wildlife suitability. Direction, intensity, timing and habitat matter too.

The light, its use and its story

Mounted high in a tree and aimed down through the canopy, the Gloaming does something no ground-level fixture can: it lights a space the way the moon does, from above, in soft dappled pools broken by leaves and branches. The effect is quiet and entirely natural - you notice the garden, not the lighting.

It's fully shielded, so the source stays hidden. Angled correctly, there is no glare at all: you can stand anywhere beneath it and never see the light itself, only what it touches. Mounting no higher than around six feet keeps the spill low and contained, and keeps the fixture serviceable without a ladder.

The gloaming is the old British word for the last light of dusk - the slow blue hour after sunset. It seemed the right name for a light that falls from above.

Every Hudson fixture takes its name from the British landscape after dark - its creatures, its plants, and the old country words for dusk.

Placement & specifications

Placement advice

Mount above the area you want to use and aim downward. Select the beam to suit the distance and the surface that needs light.

Avoid lighting nests, roosts and dark habitat. Tree attachments need to allow for healthy growth and maintenance.
